OOC Ask: Are you worried about the impending Tumblr Purge and getting taken out by mistake?

{To be honest, not entirely for a few reasons.

First, there’s the fact that there’s already been a purge, and it sounded like people could get their accidentally-deleted blogs back pretty easily. This of course isn’t saying that it’s definitely going to be easy should mine get accidentally deleted, but it is a little reassuring.

Second, this entire situation reminds me of the old LJ purges. Like, it is eerily similar, my folks, from LJ selling out to a big corporation that immediately turned it into a toilet (Six Apart, in its case) to a massive purge going down to get rid of the absolutely, 100% illegal everywhere sort of porn. I’d survived that (like I said—old hat here), so I figure there’s a good chance I’ll survive this too.

Granted, Tumblr’s making policy changes that are a mite stricter than the ones LJ enacted before its purges, not to mention stuff that’s perfectly fine (particularly stuff about sexuality and not necessarily adult subjects at that) is getting flagged, so it’s hard to say for certain that anyone’s safe just by following the two usual rules of “don’t post anything that could remotely end up being flagged as adult content” and “don’t piss off anyone who would flag you to be petty” (which were the two biggest lessons I’d learned from the LJ Strikethroughs).

Third and finally, though, I’ve always been a bit of a preparer because I like being able to roll back onto my feet if things go sideways. In particular, I’m doing the following:

  • Making a dummy account to add as staff here. Because this is a sideblog, this is more or less a safety net in case something happens to my main. That and I can hoard a URL to replace this one if need be.
  • Looking into my options for mirroring this blog.

Word of warning for those of you considering doing this: WordPress (the name I’ve been hearing a lot lately) will either force you to get a really stupid .home.blog name or to find a place that will host your blog for some coin. I mean, WordPress’s cheapest recommended host is literally $3 a month. If you’re cool with that, godspeed. If not, I’ve personally been looking at Blogger/Blogspot. Old school, but it’s just about the only free blogging platform that’s still somewhat recommended these days. Still, be careful if you do post adult content because you’re going from the Yahoo overlords to the Google ones. If that still won’t deter you, here’s a post about transferring from Tumblr to Blogger: http://www.analyticsforfun.com/2014/04/how-to-move-your-blog-from-tumblr-to.html

This one might also be a mite simpler: https://yourbusiness.azcentral.com/import-tumblr-blogger-10881.html

(But of course, I’m also open to suggestions for free blog hosting. Because, you know, even though I’m an adult, I’m way too cheap and lazy to pay for a hobby blog. Even if that is what most people do these days.)

  • Encouraging y’all to follow me on Twitter/Discord. Shameless, I know, but if this blog gets punted into the dark void, these are the best ways to check in and see if/where I’ve set things back up.
