Ever since adopting a Rockruff (a week ago), my Growlithe (who I have owned for 5 years now) has started resource guarding, which she has never done before. I believe it’s because she is wary of the new addition, but she’s started growling at me as well when I go near her food or toys. How can I train her out of this without catching a Flamethrower in the face, as well as get her and Rockruff comfortable with each other?

Any change in a house growlithe’s living situation may cause stress, and any form of stress may manifest in a variety of negative behaviors. In short, what you’re observing is stress related to the new addition to your family, and it’s important that you treat this in order to get the hoarding behavior to stop.

Doing so may be easier said than done, however, as it will require you to exercise the utmost patience and skill with reading body language, even though what you’ll have to do is actually fairly simple. That is to say, what you need to do is set aside some time and a space for both of your pokémon to meet. And yes, they need to interact, although at first, it’s okay to have them do so at a distance. More specifically, you’ll need to set up a comfortable, relaxed environment stocked with enough toys, food, water, or comfortable bedding to keep both pokémon calm. Allow your growlithe into this space first and let her get comfortable, then introduce your rockruff. Remove one or the other and end the encounter as soon as one (or both) begin to show signs of stress.

The trick is to teach your growlithe (and your rockruff, for that matter) to stay in one place at a distance for a period of time. You may need to use positive reinforcement (perhaps by giving your growlithe treats whenever she stays or heels), but either way, you must be patient. Training out negative behaviors takes time, especially if a pokémon is responding to extreme stress (as your growlithe seems to be).

would you consider trainers of hoenn/sinnoh/johto etc. similar to your blog? they sometimes do lore-ish stuff through “interviews”, and they write from the perspective of people in the universe?

(OOC) {I have to admit I don’t because the core concepts are about the interviews or capturing the characters and not exactly about the world as a whole, but those blogs are cool too!

On that note, shoutout to @trainersofhoenn. 😉 We did a crossover with them back in December (viewable at these links: http://bills-pokedex.tumblr.com/post/154748946481/trainersofhoenn-how-long-have-you-been-working , http://bills-pokedex.tumblr.com/post/155217492776/an-interview-with-brendan), but their own content is most excellent. They’re the OG interview blog, and they do a wonderful job making each character unique and fascinating to read about. Some entries are hilarious, others are tear-jerkers, and some are even somewhere in between. There’s pretty much something for everyone if you’re into bite-sized character-driven stuff!

(Also, don’t be fooled by the lack of updates as of recent, by the way. They’ve got literal years of good content, and, well, life happens. It’s definitely worth sticking around for future posts!)}

(OOC) So, I’m curious, are there other blogs like yours? Also, would you be opposed to people making other ______’s-pokedex blogs? (I think that this could potentially really cool)

To be honest, I think the only one I know about (or the only one that deals primarily in headcanon/lore about the Pokémon world itself, often told in the tone of someone who lives in that universe) is @bland-pokemon-headcanons. If you’re looking for more snarky ‘dex entries from the perspective of characters, I have to admit I don’t know of any others, but if someone would like to point the anon to their blog or a blog they know, by all means, feel free to leave a note!

As for your second question, I wouldn’t mind at all! 🙂 Just shoot me an ask if/when you do so I can check your stuff out!

May I also add on to the Gallade ask? Gallade can also learn Ice Punch and Stone Edge!

The ask in question: http://bills-pokedex.tumblr.com/post/161106519940/hey-bill-i-need-some-advice-my-gallade-has-been

Excellent point, anonymous, although a special note should be made about Ice Punch. if you wish to teach your gallade this move in order to counter flying-types, it’s worth it to be aware of the fact that flying-types … well, fly. That is to say, it would require extra accuracy and agility training in order to teach your gallade to not only leap that high but also strike a fast-moving, high-altitude target.

Stone Edge, being a larger move in scale (or a move that can be shot, depending on a trainer’s personal battling style), does not typically need extra training and can simply strike a flying pokémon if that flyer goes in for a physical attack (as many basic flying-type moves tend to be).

You may remember my ask about my eevee that tried to woo a flaaffy. Well, he managed to evolve into a umbreon on his own and luckily for him, the zorua he was trying to impress accepted him. Now they both seem very happy together and it’s probably just me being super paranoid, but is there any way I can make sure he doesn’t regret the decision? I’m worried because the zorua was wild when they met (I caught her later on) and I wouldn’t want her to want to leave again.

Because happiness-based evolutions tend to be tied to positive experiences (for obvious reasons), it’s actually rare for a pokémon who evolves via that method to regret their decision later on. Even members of a branched line such as umbreon and espeon rarely show any curiosity towards their counterparts, simply because of the overwhelming positivity attached to their evolution.

Still, if you truly wish to avoid any possible feelings of remorse, the best that you can do is support both your umbreon and your new zorua. Train them both (especially your umbreon), help them unlock their potential as dark-types, and most importantly, provide them with a happy enough home that they feel safe, comfortable, and loved.

Congratulations, anonymous, and best of luck!

So my kirlia is at that age when he has started noticing girls but he doesnt seem to like any of the females from his egg group. Would it be a bad idea to introduce him to pokemon outside his egg group since he can’t breed with them or do you think he would not care

It’s certainly worth exploration, anonymous. Whereas allowing a pokémon to romance a human or vice versa tends to be a taboo, there are really no social qualms against allowing a pokémon to romance something not within its own egg group. So long as your kirlia understands that breeding would be impossible and that it’s imperative for him to engage in safe practices when mating, he should be fine.

Hey Bill, I need some advice: My Gallade has been training for months but can’t seem to defeat strong Flying types. How can I help him train mentally as well as physically?

There are several ways you can do this.

If you’re looking to train your gallade’s psychic abilities, meditation is often the key. If you can, try pairing him with a medicham for best effect, but if not, simply be sure to have him sit down and engage in self-reflection for at least an hour a day. While, certainly, it sounds counterintuitive to have your gallade train his mental abilities by not doing anything at all, that’s strangely how many psychics go about fine-tuning their powers. (Some even do so under waterfalls, which may sound like a cliché but is actually an effective way to train discipline.) This is due to the fact that when meditating, a pokémon’s entire focus is on strengthening their inner self and seeking enlightenment, so by stopping all physical movement, they have no choice but to train their minds instead.

Of course, this isn’t the only way a gallade can defeat a flying-type. Gallade can, for example, learn Thunderbolt, Thunder Wave, and Charge Beam, among many others. However, because many of these moves don’t match either of gallade’s native types, training yours to use them may be a bit trickier. On the other hand, the associated training is often less time-consuming. You would still need to dedicate an hour a day to do so, and there will still be some level of meditation involved, of course. It’s just that most forms of type-based training are more active compared to psychic training.

For example, with electric-type moves, while your gallade will need to learn how to channel electricity properly (a process that will involve some meditation, combined with plenty of focus on the field), the bulk of your gallade’s training beyond that will be a simple matter of target practice, as electrical attacks are notoriously difficult to control due to their speed.

In short, each element tends to require different training techniques (some of which may vary depending on whether or not you’re dealing with your pokémon’s native elements), but should you simply want to train your gallade’s psychic abilities, intensive meditation should do the trick.

Best of luck, anonymous!

Is it safe for my Sandslash to be rearing my newly hatched Chikorita? I obtained the egg from a breeder so that i could have my first ‘real’ pokemon, since the Sandslash was my Dads who gave it to me. Sandslash is acting very motherly towards him, and I want to make sure that this is acceptable behaivior.

Yes, of course. Any pokémon may raise any other, regardless of species or type of both the “parent” and the child. So long as your sandslash is careful, both it and your chikorita should be fine.

Bill! Please answer my questions I sent in months ago! I don’t know if you ever got them and it makes me sad.

We apologize for the delay, anonymous. It was certainly not my intent on making you feel sad! However, to give you an idea for why I might not have answered your ask yet:

In order to clear my inbox, I often put asks in my drafts instead so I can work on them at my own leisure. This means that, in total, I currently have over 180 unanswered asks. There are, meanwhile, a few left in queue, so I hope to reduce this number considerably soon.

Also keep in mind that I may not answer certain questions, either due to the fact that I’ve gotten quite a few like them or I simply can’t answer them at all. (It’s fascinating how much some of you know about Mewtwo, for one.)

Finally, while I would increase the frequency of queued asks, I’ve been told by my editor that “the mun has been busy in real life” … whatever that means.

Regardless, I apologize again for the delay, and I hope to clear my inbox—and, thus, hopefully get to your ask—soon.
