Entry: A honeycreeper-like pokémon native to the tropical region of Alola. Four different varieties exist, each native to a separate island of the Alolan archipelago. From what scientists can gather, these form differences are caused by the presence of four distinct species of flowers, which are found separately on each island. When an oricorio sips the nectar of a differently colored flower, it undergoes a form change into the type of oricorio native to the flower’s home island, thus gaining differently colored feathers and a different elemental affinity. In addition to the physical change, each oricorio learns a different dance, which it instantly incorporates into its fighting techniques. These dances are shockingly similar to human dance styles, leading many to speculate on how oricorio could have learned modern cheerleading, the flamenco dancing of a region nowhere near Alola, sacred Alolan folk dances, or the first half of the Gin no Mai, which even the author wasn’t able to learn from his own mother.

Pikachu? (Part II)

Togedemaru

Entry: Contrary to popular belief, not a round, pointy pikachu. However, this pokémon’s pointy hairs are as just as sensitive to electricity as its mouse-like counterpart. Each hair is an individual lightning rod capable of collecting electricity from the atmosphere and of releasing this stored electricity upon contact. Likewise, when agitated, togedemaru can raise and stiffen these hairs, creating an additional, needle-like line of defense. It is, in other words, just slightly ill-advised to pick this pokémon up.

Joltik and Galvantula

Entry: A tiny, arachnid-like pokémon first discovered in the magnetic caves of Unova. Joltik’s small, furry body is incapable of generating electricity, so instead, it latches onto larger beings and picks up static electricity from them. It’s important for trainers to check themselves after leaving caves because of this. Although joltik normally latch onto pokémon, they can’t always tell the difference between pokémon and humans, and their tiny size often makes it easy to overlook them. One good way of detecting joltik is by wearing dark clothing when you travel through caves, as their neon-yellow bodies will often stand out against dark backgrounds. Another way, of course, is waiting until you’re randomly electrocuted. At that point, there’s usually a very good chance that you’re unknowingly carrying a joltik.

Galvantula
The EleSpider Pokémon

Entry: The evolved form of joltik, by battle experience. This large, tarantula-like pokémon hunts by weaving an electrically-charged web in its domain. When prey stumbles into this web, the charge instantly paralyzes them long enough for the galvantula to crawl down, bind them in an electrically-charged cocoon, and bite them to liquefy their organs enough for later consumption. Needless to say, this is a brilliant hunting strategy in the wild. When tamed, however … not so much.

Chinchou and Lanturn

Chinchou
The Angler Pokémon

Entry: A small, anglerfish-like pokémon that lives in the depths of the ocean. Due to its habitat in the deepest, darkest parts of the ocean, chinchou rely on the light they emit from their dual antennae to attract prey and to communicate with other chinchou. They illuminate these antennae by channeling electrical energy through their wire-like stalks, straight to their bulbs. Given the fact that these pokémon are exclusively oceanic and given salt water’s tendency to conduct electricity, one would think that a pokémon generating enough electricity to illuminate two bulbs for extended periods of time would be extremely dangerous, but in actuality, this process only leaves a chinchou with a slight tingling sensation as a result. On the other hand, it electrocutes everything (except other chinchou) within a ten-foot radius of the chinchou in question, but at least the chinchou itself is fine.

Lanturn
The Light Pokémon

Entry: The evolved form of chinchou, by battle experience. Known for the brilliant light it emits from its antennae, lanturn is referred to colloquially as “the sea-star”—a reputation that is largely uncontested by the starmie it shares its habitat with, largely because starmie know exactly how weak to Discharges they are. Contrary to popular belief, lanturn do not produce their light—which is so bright that it can illuminate the surface even if the lanturn is three miles deep—from electrical currents. Instead, lanturn produce their light through chemical reactions between the bodily fluids and symbiotic bacteria contained within its antenna bulbs. This, of course, conserves electrical energy, which is of great benefit to lanturn in the event that a starmie would like to object to lanturn’s colloquial name.

Johto Legendaries, Part I

Raikou
The Thunder Pokémon

Entry: According to Johtonian legend, an electric-type that had died in the burning of the Brass Tower was resurrected as the avatar of thunder and a representation of the lightning that had started the fire. It is said that this pokémon races across the land as part of its duty to watch over humanity for the day we will be worthy enough to be in the presence of Ho-oh again. In the meantime, as it races across the land, it releases devastating thunderbolts from the storm clouds on its back. This is actually a random occurrence tied to Johto’s naturally stormy weather, but local Johtonians like to think of it as its way of striking down the unworthy and purging the lands of sinners in the lightning-sparked flames of justice … which, honestly, is the least morbid part of our belief system.

Entei
The Volcano Pokémon

Entry: According to Johtonian legend, a fire-type that had died in the burning of the Brass Tower was resurrected as the avatar of volcanoes and a representation of the flames that had engulfed the tower. It is said that this pokémon races across the land as part of its duty to watch over humanity for the day we will be worthy enough to be in the presence of Ho-oh again. It is also said that, as the avatar of volcanoes, every time it roars, a volcano erupts somewhere in the world. Luckily, this is not exactly true, as if it had been, then the world would have been engulfed in a volcanic apocalypse every time a certain friend of the Ecruteak gym leader’s made contact with the wrong legendary beast in his quest to become the chosen one of Suicune.

Suicune
The Aurora Pokémon

Entry: According to Johtonian legend, a water-type that had died in the burning of the Brass Tower was resurrected as the avatar of the north winds and a representation of the rain that had put out the fire. It is said that this pokémon races across the land as part of its duty to watch over humanity for the day we will be worthy enough to be in the presence of Ho-oh again. It is also said that Suicune has the ability to control water, purify heavily polluted lakes and rivers, and create healing springs. Those who are not familiar with Johtonian legend may think this means Suicune is the least dangerous of the three beasts. Those who are familiar with Johtonian legend, however, realize exactly how much water is in the interior of the region and that “drown the unworthy” is just as favored a punishment among the legendaries as “burn them alive.”

The Mareep Line

Mareep
The Wool Pokémon

Entry: A two-foot-tall, sheep-like pokémon native to the fields of Johto. This shy and docile pokémon stores electricity in its fluffy wool. The more electricity it stores, the more its wool puffs out. Eventually, the wool falls off naturally, and at that point, it can be collected and spun. If used immediately, mareep yarn can serve as a handy natural battery for small devices. However, if allowed to discharge its electricity through a grounder over a period of two days, it can be used as an adequate (albeit slightly glowing) substitute for yarn made of sheep wool. It is thus favored by crafters for its brilliant properties, as mareep wool can add shine and glitter to most knitting projects. Such as, for example, a … rather charming autumn sweater a grandmother sends to her grandson who doesn’t have the heart to tell her he hasn’t worn sweaters in years.

Flaaffy

Entry: The evolved form of mareep, by battle experience. A two-and-a-half-foot-tall sheep-like pokémon native to the fields of northern Johto. Also: a sheep half-covered in coarse, electrified wool and half-covered in rubbery, non-conductive skin. Also: apparently what androids dream of, the author has been told.

Ampharos
The Light Pokémon

Entry: The evolved form of flaaffy, by battle experience. Although ampharos loses its evolutionary line’s signature wool (except in its mega-evolved form, in which it gains long, flowing locks), it gains a tail tipped with a jewel capable of emitting brilliant light. This light is so bright it can be seen from space if wielded by a healthy (and perhaps angry) ampharos. Knowing this, the people of ancient, seafaring civilizations often used ampharos, both to communicate over long distances and to guide ships around rocky shores. It is therefore one of the few pokémon that has ever guided entire naval fleets using the power of its rear end.

The Elekid Line

Elekid

Entry: This baby, plug-like pokémon generates electricity by spinning its arms around quickly. The faster it spins its arms, the more electricity it generates, and the more electricity it generates, the more likely the area between its prong-shaped horns begins to glow blue. At that point, even the air around elekid may be super-charged with electricity, and given the fact that elekid struggles to store the electricity it generates, approaching this pokémon at this point may be a bad idea. However, the air between its prongs always carries some form of charge capable of shocking any unwary human who sticks their hand between them. Or, at least, that’s according to the pokédex. According to the author, if you’re a human who approaches a pokémon incapable of storing electricity to stick its hands directly between its horns, you have wandered far out of “unwary” territory and straight into “asking for it” territory.

Electabuzz
The Electric Pokémon

Entry: The evolved form of elekid, by battle experience. This oni-like pokémon constantly consumes and discharges vast amounts of electricity. In fact, the quantity of energy that passes into and out of electabuzz’s body causes its skin to glow in darkness and the hair of anyone within five feet of it to stand on end. While research is still ongoing into harnessing this electricity for human use, among electabuzz colonies, individual electabuzz use their abilities for communication: when two electabuzz touch, they can pass currents between them in order to convey emotion. Needless to say, electabuzz trainers should be aware that not all electabuzz understand that humans are not odd-looking electabuzz.

Electivire
The Thunderbolt Pokémon

This beast-like pokémon is capable of unleashing over 20000 volts of electricity from the tips of its tails. The Magnemite Line

Entry: This small, magnet-like pokémon subsists entirely on electricity, and as such, it thrives best in urban environments, where it moves in groups from one power station to another. Additionally, it moves by using its electromagnetism to repel off the ground, meaning it’s silent as it moves but is very likely to disrupt electronic equipment (such as a computer, a cell phone, or a television set) as it passes. On occasion, it will glide power lines to residential areas for food, so if your electronics glitch shortly before you experience a blackout, it’s advised that you should check your breaker box, as a large congregation of magnemite may have been attracted to your home. Also, it should be noted that magnemite are capable of learning both Thunder Wave and Electroball prior to evolution, so should you find a large congregation of magnemite attached to your breaker box, it is also advised that you consider moving.

Magneton

No, the author cannot explain the Pokémon Symposium’s reasoning either.

Magnezone

Entry: The evolved form of magneton, by battle experience, if trained in areas rich with the mineral magnetite. There is a popular theory within the scientific community that magnezone is capable of further evolution. However, experiments launched into finding the requirements of such an evolution have so far failed. As for why scientists believe the magnemite line is capable of a third permanent, non-mega evolution, it could be because magnezone’s abilities have been known to be volatile and capable of being boosted further by exposure to powerful magnetic fields. Alternatively, it could be because it evolves from a pokémon consisting of three magnemite stuck together, and even other members of the Symposium have difficulty believing this is an actual, separate pokémon.

The Tynamo Line

Eelektrik

Known for its insatiable appetite, this lamprey-like pokémon glides through the air to seek out prey, which it then wraps around and paralyzes with strong electric shocks. Luckily, soon after evolution, eelektrik begin hunting alone, typically far separated from its numerous former schoolmates in the dark, labyrinthine cave systems. Thus, the average trainer may only encounter one at a time. Out of nowhere. When they least expect it.

Eelektross

This marine pokémon is known for latching onto prey with its sucker mouth, delivering a powerful electric shock to paralyze them, and dragging them into the ocean depths. However, as eelektrik are neither ocean pokémon naturally nor, typically, native to cave systems rich in thunder stone it is difficult for an eelektrik to evolve. Luckily, most cave systems in Unova have underground rivers that conveniently empty into the seas surrounding the region, which just happens to be a reliable and convenient source of thunder stone.

Unova Legendaries, Part VI

Tornadus
The Cyclone Pokémon

Entry: According to Unovan culture, Tornadus is the embodiment of severe winds. As such, this djinn-like pokémon is noted for flying through the air at speeds of over 250 miles per hour and creating hurricane-level winds wherever it goes. As a flying-type legendary, it is also gifted with powerful wind-based attacks, which it fires from its tail and which are capable of leveling a house in seconds. Given the fact that the author has just described a pokémon as being capable of generating powerful gusts of wind capable of destroying a house from its tail, he will now pause and allow his readers to get every remark they are most likely thinking about Tornadus out of their systems.

Thundurus
The Bolt Strike Pokémon

Entry: According to Unovan culture, Thundurus is the embodiment of severe thunderstorms. As such, this djinn-like pokémon is noted for flying through the air at high speeds and striking the earth wherever it goes with powerful bolts of lightning. These random attacks have been known to cause intense forest fires throughout the region that devastate not only pokémon habitats but also human settlements. For this reason, although Thundurus is still respected as a legendary, it does not maintain a favorable reputation. On the other hand, it is said that a pokémon of equal strength may be sufficient enough to stop a rampaging Thundurus in its tracks, so in other words, there are times when only Mew can prevent forest fires.

Landorus
The Abundance Pokémon
