Victini
The Victory Pokémon
Type: Psychic/Fire
Official Registration #: 494
Entry: According to Unovan lore, Victini is the legendary of luck and victory and thus has the ability to grant both power and fortune to whomever trains it. It is said that if sent into any battle, no matter the odds, Victini and its allies will always come out victorious. Unless, of course, Victini comes up against Kyogre, Manaphy, a mega slowbro, most ground-types, most other water-types, the slightest affront to Unovan sensibilities, and—despite its native region’s history as a former colony—British cuisine, slang, general culture, and roundabouts.
Tag: Fire
Hello Bill! I went through the entire database you have posted here (I love your work by the way!) and I have come across the realization that you do not have an entry for the fabled Pokemon Kyurem. I have heard it can easily generate freezing cold temperatures and is said to be vicious, so if you go to investigate, be careful! Be sure to post your findings as well.
Thank you!
It’s very true that I have yet to cover many of the Unovan legendaries, and I do agree that the legend of Kyurem is especially fascinating. However, I must say that it would hardly do the legend justice to cover only Kyurem and not the other two dragons associated with the story, so without further ado, the dragons of Unova:
Reshiram
The Vast White Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Fire
Official Registration #: 643
Entry: According to Unovan folklore, Reshiram flew across the region on feathery, white wings and wielded powerful flames to fight in the name of truth. According to Unovan memes, however, the most interesting aspects of Reshiram are its species name and the pointed organ between its hind legs, and because of this unfortunately placed interest, this blog’s staff finds it necessary to clarify that the name “Vast White” refers to Reshiram’s height, the organ between its hind legs is a set of feathers that assists in navigation, and the author is immensely disappointed in anyone who assumes otherwise for any of this.
Zekrom
The Deep Black Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Electric
Official Registration #: 644
Entry: According to Unovan folklore, Zekrom flew across the region on leathery, black wings and wielded powerful bolts of electricity to fight in the name of ideals. More specifically, Zekrom sided with anyone who sought an ideal world by hiding in anvil clouds and striking the earth or its trainer’s opponents with lightning. Because nothing says “Unovan” quite like establishing your concept of an ideal world via liberal application of excessive force, preferably from above.
Kyurem
The Boundary Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Ice
Official Registration #: 646
Entry: According to Unovan folklore, Kyurem fell to Earth thousands of years ago, and in the process, the energy contained within its body split in two and evacuated to form Reshiram and Zekrom. In the absence of both its thirst for truth and passion for ideals, Kyurem became an icy shell: empty within, save for the power to exude supercold air capable of freezing anything within a mile radius of itself. In other words, Kyurem is a hollow being, devoid of all its hopes and dreams but in possession of an icy heart—which, in other words, means that this pokémon is a rather accurate depiction of adulthood.
The Fletchling Line
Fletchling
The Tiny Robin Pokémon
Type: Normal/Flying
Official Registration #: 661
Entry: A small songbird pokémon native to the fields of Kalos. Fletchling is famous for its intricate dances and beautiful songs, which it uses in combination to perform what is objectively considered to be the cutest form of communication in the pokémon world. The author would go on to say that, despite the fact that fletchling is considered to be cute, it is somehow one of the most vicious and territorial pokémon in the Kalos region, but to be frank, many of you have been following this blog long enough to know that this is exactly what to expect from it.
Fletchinder
The Ember Pokémon
Type: Fire/Flying
Official Registration #: 662
Entry: The evolved form of fletchling, by battle experience. Using its newly acquired fire element, fletchinder hunt by setting tall grasses on fire and pouncing on whatever flees from the flames … because the pokémon kingdom is a brutal and often horrifying concept, which is exactly what many researchers consider to be fascinating about it.
Talonflame
The Scorching Pokémon
Type: Fire/Flying
Official Registration #: 663
Entry: The evolved form of fletchinder, by battle experience. With diving speeds of up to 310 miles per hour, talonflame is among the fastest pokémon in existence. In the excitement of a battle, it uses both this and its ability to expel fire from the spaces between its feathers to overwhelm and devastate its opponents … or to burn down whatever parts of a field its preevolved form has yet to set ablaze.
The Fennekin Line
Fennekin
The Fox Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 653
Entry: One of three pokémon traditionally offered to new trainers at the beginning of their journeys in Kalos. Fennekin are popular starters for their adorable appearances and behaviors. They are frequently found trailing after larger pokémon or their trainers while chewing cutely on twigs they find along Kalosean forest paths. These twigs fuel fennekin’s internal fires, so in order to combat this, they shake their large ears cutely in order to expel hot air. Considering the number of cute traits and the species’ identity as a fire fox, it should be worth it to note that the vulpix line, a fellow fire fox evolutionary tree noted for their vain dispositions, do not get along with fennekin and have been known to engage in vicious physical assaults on fennekn out of jealousy, despite the fact that the two lines are actually distantly related. Therefore, it is ill-advised to leave a fennekin in the same room as a vulpix. Unless, of course, you happen to be the sort of trainer who is somehow entertained by reality shows such as Undella Shore and Real Housewives of Orre … at which point the author respectfully asks you to relinquish your trainer’s license at the nearest pokémon center.
Braixen
The Fox Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 654
Entry: The evolved form of fennekin, by battle experience. This bipedal fox-like pokémon keeps a twig in its bushy tail when not engaged in battle or in the vicinity of fellow members of the fennekin line. In either condition, the braixen unsheathes this twig, the tip of which—as a result of friction against its stiff, flint-like hairs—catches on fire as soon as it’s fully drawn. Once lit, braixen may use this light to communicate with its fellow pokémon by waving its twig in elaborate patterns before it. A visual representation of multiple braixen communicating by twig fire with one another may be seen here.
Delphox
The Fox Pokémon
Type: Fire/Psychic
Official Registration #: 655
Entry: The evolved form of braixen, by battle experience. A five-foot-tall fox gifted with powerful flame and psychic abilities, delphox’s signature attack involves combining its elements to create a vortex of fire that reaches temperatures of up to 5400 degrees Fahrenheit. In theory, this attack draws in its opponents and inflicts a devastating blow of the fire element. In practice, given the fact that a vortex of hot air creates a powerful vacuum, this attack draws in literally anything around it save for itself and inflicts a devastating amount of property damage.
The Tepig Line
Tepig
The Fire Pig Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 498
Entry: One of three pokémon traditionally offered to new trainers at the beginning of their journeys in Unova. Noted for its adorable appearance and equally adorable proclivity for exhaling fireballs from its distinctive nose when excited, tepig are not only a popular pet in Unova but also a popular subject in children’s books set in the Unovan countryside. However, because of its proclivity for exhaling fireballs from its distinctive nose when excited, attempting to make live action films of the aforementioned children’s book has frequently been met with disaster.
Pignite
The Fire Pig Pokémon
Type: Fire/Fighting
Official Registration #: 497
Entry: The evolved form of tepig, by battle experience. A hardy and aggressive pokémon, pignite is capable of launching devastating, full-body attacks. In order to fuel these attacks, pignite often consumes whatever is within reach, regardless of whether or not it is actually edible to most other pokémon. It should go without saying that it is a good idea to keep all hands, limbs, clothing, wallets, and valuable research equipment out of reach of this pokémon at all times.
Emboar
The Mega Fire Pig Pokémon
Type: Fire/Fighting
Official Registration #: 500
Entry: The evolved form of pignite, by battle experience. A master of hand-to-hand combat, emboar possess the power to set their chins ablaze with a full beard of fire. This beard can then be used to set its fists on fire for devastating punches and palm strikes, consume emboar’s body for flaming Rollouts, or any of a number of other incredible physical attacks. Yet the thing emboar is most known for is the fact that it is in the third starting pokémon of the fire and fighting elements to be announced in a region, as when it comes to pokémon research and training, repetitive elemental combinations take precedence over the individual qualities and behaviors of an evolutionary family.
The Chimchar Line
Chimchar
The Chimp Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 390
Entry: One of three pokémon traditionally offered to new trainers at the beginning of their journeys in Sinnoh. A small, agile monkey pokémon native to Sinnohan forests. Gases churn within its stomach and fuel the constant fires that sprout from its rear end … and someone wrote this fact in the Sinnohan pokédex and has in no way been embellished or edited by this writer.
Monferno
The Playful Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 391
Entry: The evolved form of chimchar, by battle experience. Using its unparalleled agility and the flames on its tail, a monferno can spring from sheer walls or high ceilings in order to launch vicious, fast-paced attacks. While the Sinnohan pokédex states that its flaming tail is its only weapon, this is not entirely true. Ember does not come from its tail, and given the entry left for its evolutionary predecessor and the fact that a monferno will typically learn this move as a chimchar, it is possibly best not to think too much about where Ember actually comes from.
Infernape
The Flame Pokémon
Type: Fire/Fighting
Official Registration #: 392
Entry: The evolved form of monferno, by battle experience. Using its crown of fire and the fire on its fists and legs, an infernape adds a flame element to its own unique style. The style itself is noteworthy, as for centuries, martial artists in China have attempted to adapt and emulate it for human use. The end result is a wild, aggressive, highly unpredictable form known as drunken monkey style, as it evokes the look of an infernape that had consumed fermented berries to the point where it will fight anything that moves within its line of sight. Interestingly enough, certain European cultures have a similar fighting style, but these were inspired by a drunk infernape of a more metaphorical nature and were therefore developed via perhaps less dignified means.
The Torchic Line
Torchic
The Chick Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 255
Entry: One of three pokémon traditionally offered to new trainers at the beginning of their journeys in Hoenn. A small, chick-like pokémon whose natural body temperature is so hot that the fireballs it launches during battle can reach temperatures in excess of 1800 degrees Fahrenheit. Thus, in Hoenn, it is said that torchic are very warm to cuddle, but given that these are the same people who live in a region that feature a desert, an active volcano, a dormant volcano, and a tropical jungle, outsiders should take torchic’s cuddliness with a grain of salt.
For your information, it is very cuddly, and someone who had the misfortune of being raised in a region where you don’t see sun for six months out of the year because of the constant rain should perhaps keep his opinions about Hoennians to himself. —LH
The reason why I poke fun at every other region but Hoenn, ladies and gentlemen. —Bill
Combusken
The Young Fowl Pokémon
Type: Fire/Fighting
Official Registration #: 256
Entry: The evolved form of torchic, by battle experience. A powerful and energetic pokémon, combusken is capable of delivering ten kicks per second, and each kick is capable of rending solid concrete in two. In Hoenn, this has made combusken a prized fighter ideal for taking on the rock- and steel-heavy Hoenn League. In Unova, however, combusken are noted for their muscular legs, which apparently taste wonderful to an Unovan when said legs are breaded, seasoned, and fried in whatever magical oils the local Floccesy Fried Chicken establishment uses.
Blaziken
The Blaze Pokémon
Type: Fire/Fighting
Official Registration #: 257
Entry: The evolved form of combusken, by battle experience. Upon evolution, blaziken gain the ability to jump thirty-story buildings, set their fists on fire via flame cuffs, breathe jets of flames, and endure hours of intense fighting. Upon mega evolution, it also gains the ability Speed Boost … because that’s exactly what you need a six-foot-tall chicken with fire powers and superhuman martial arts skills to do: gain speed boosts naturally.
The Cyndaquil Line
Cyndaquil
The Fire Mouse Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 155
Entry: One of three pokémon traditionally offered to new trainers at the beginning of their journeys in Johto. The flames on its back are not just for protection: they are also directly connected to its emotional state. When calm or happy, its flames burn at a low temperature. When angry or startled, it releases a burst of hot flames, and when completely exhausted, its flames go out completely. As a reminder to all trainers, it is both inadvisable and irresponsible to reignite your cyndaquil by feeding it coffee. If your cyndaquil’s fire goes out, allow it to sleep.
Quilava
The Volcano Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 156
Entry: The evolved form of cyndaquil, by battle experience. Once evolved, quilava is capable of harnessing the flames on its back for both offensive and defensive purposes. By superheating the air around it, quilava is capable of keeping its foes at bay long enough for it to launch an assault from the same fires. Quick and nimble, this pokémon is capable of burning foes even when dodging attacks … a behavior that should be closely monitored by its trainers, as there have been over thirty instances of a gym burning to the ground thanks to an overexcited but somewhat less-than-graceful quilava.
Typhlosion
The Volcano Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 157
Entry: The evolved form of quilava, by battle experience. Trainers should take extreme caution when handling this pokémon, as, like its preevolved forms, its fire abilities are directly connected to its emotional state. However, as it is the last in its evolution line, it should go without saying that its pyrokinesis and thermokinesis are both far more powerful than either cyndaquil’s or quilava’s. Even the slightest touch from an enraged typhlosion may set its surroundings ablaze … which is unfortunate for a pokémon native to a region that, up until recently, firmly believed that paper and bamboo were perfectly acceptable building materials.
Heatmor and Durant
Heatmor
The Anteater Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 631
Entry: An anteater pokémon that lives in caves. Using its narrow snout and its flame-spewing abilities, heatmor is able to reach into the burrows of its primary food source and kill off massive amounts of durant at one time using just one Flamethrower. Unfortunately, seeing as this move would kill entire durant nests before any of heatmor’s prey moved close enough to the opening of their burrows and seeing as heatmor can’t actually learn any moves it can use to excavate its meals, this narrow snout, combined with literal fire powers, may not be the wisest adaptation for heatmor to have.
Durant
The Iron Ant Pokémon
Type: Bug/Steel
Official Registration #: 632
Entry: An ant-like pokémon that lives in caves. Using its durable pincers, durant carves twisting nests deep into rock walls. This, combined with its ability to reinforce its metal armor and its tendency to band together in massive waves, helps it to protect itself and its young from its only natural predator, heatmor. Unfortunately, heatmor have the ability to exhale streams of fire that can follow these narrow corridors right to the heart of durant colonies, which is to say that perhaps these were not the wisest survival adaptations for durant to have.
Pansear and Simisear
Pansear
The High Temp Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 513
Entry: A monkey-like pokémon native to Unovan volcanoes. …Or it is according to the Unovan pokédex, which is fantastically interesting, seeing as Unova doesn’t even have volcanoes…
Simisear
The Ember Pokémon
Type: Fire
Official Registration #: 514
Entry: The evolved form of pansear, by exposure to fire stone. This excitable pokémon is possibly the easiest among the three Unovan monkeys to please, as it adores any kind of sweet and will adore anyone who supplies them with sugar. However, trainers should be cautioned against giving their simisear sugar, as sweets also fuels simisear’s fire and energetic personality, which in turn means a simisear on a sugar high is more liable to launch fireballs at anything within range of its long-distance attacks.
