The Snorunt Line

Snorunt
The Snow Hat Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 361
Entry: Despite the fact that this childlike pokémon is much more comfortable in regions with heavy snow, it was curiously first discovered in the Hoenn region, specifically in the lower chambers of Shoal Cave. Given the general warmth of the seawater in that region, the presence of snorunt—and, in fact, the frigid environment of the cavern it lives in—has baffled researchers since its initial discovery. However, the author would also like to remind the research community that this is the same region whose legendary pantheon includes a giant sentient block of never-melt ice, so honestly, the fact that there is a chamber that has been iced over and sealed off from the outside world for centuries should come as a surprise to absolutely no one.

Glalie
The Face Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 362
Entry: The evolved form of snorunt, by battle experience. Through the process of evolution, a snorunt gains a shell of rock, which in turn collects a thick hide of ice thanks to the instantaneous freezing of the moisture in the air immediately surrounding it. The resulting pokémon is a creature that not only has the ability to instantly freeze anything surrounding it but also appears to be a giant, floating, disembodied head. Yet despite its intimidating powers and appearance, it’s actually quite gentle, largely because it retains the shyness of its pre-evolved form. Despite this, it is still not recommended to come into physical contact with a glalie, largely because—thanks to its ability to instantaneously freeze anything within immediate vicinity of it—skin-to-shell contact has the same effect as licking a metal pole in the dead of winter (not that the author has done either).

Froslass
The Snow Land Pokémon
Type: Ice/Ghost
Official Registration #: 478
Entry: The evolved form of female snorunt, by exposure to dawn stone. Sinnohan legends warn about froslass. According to regional folklore, travelers lost on snowy mountains may encounter what appears to be a beautiful woman beckoning to them. If one goes to this woman, they will quickly find a wild froslass instead, who will immediately freeze them and drag them to her lair. Whether or not this is true is still a matter of debate, but it is known that tamed froslass do have a habit of staring at their trainers oddly and growing unsettlingly quiet whenever it snows. The author reassures his readers, however, that there have been no cases of a tamed froslass kidnapping their trainers and stealing them away to frozen wastelands … that he knows of, anyway.

Stop scaring the readers. You know that only happened six times in recorded history. —LH

Hoenn Legendaries Part II

Regirock
The Rock Peak Pokémon
Type: Rock
Official Registration #: 377
Entry: One of the three legendary golems said to have been gifted to humans early in Hoenn’s civilization by the legendary Regigigas. Having been sealed away for thousands of years, Regirock was only recently unearthed in the Hoennian desert. Because early Hoennian records fail to describe Regirock in great detail (besides its purpose as the servant of both humanity and Regigigas), there are many mysteries surrounding it, such as why it was sealed away, how its body can be composed of rock from across the globe, how Regirock is capable of thought, and whether or not it is, indeed, the source of such charming sayings as “you’ve got a head full of rocks,” “you’ve got a stone heart,” and a few others that the author can’t repeat for fear of inciting the editor’s wrath.

Regice
The Iceberg Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 378
Entry: One of the three legendary golems said to have been gifted to humans early in Hoenn’s civilization by the legendary Regigigas. Like its sibling golem, Regice was sealed away for thousands of years, has only been unearthed recently, and is the source of quite a few mysteries of its own. Unlike Regirock, many of these mysteries revolve around two questions. First, why is its body made of solid, Antarctic ice when the Arctic Circle is far, far closer? Second, in what way is that practical for a tropical region, even accounting for the fact that Regice is incapable of melting? (Sure, perhaps it would be nice to have a block of ice to cool down a village, but considering the fact that only one was ever made….)

Registeel
The Iron Pokémon
Type: Steel
Official Registration #: 379
Entry: One of the three legendary golems said to have been gifted to humans early in Hoenn’s civilization by the legendary Regigigas. Like its sibling golems, Regsteel was sealed away for thousands of years and has only been unearthed recently. Unlike its sibling golems, besides the mystery of why it was sealed away, we pretty much understand quite a lot about registeel. The idea of a large, hollow body with a metal coat being tempered by underground heat and pressure for thousands of years makes perfect sense to us. Especially, you know, that describes most steel-types anyway.

The Snover Line

Snover
The Frost Tree Pokémon
Type: Grass/Ice
Official Registration #: 459
Entry: Although this short pokémon strongly resembles a snow-covered tree throughout the year, it is actually highly responsive to the seasons. For one, it migrates: in the warmer months, it migrates to the top of its mountainous habitat to live in the colder climes, whereas during the colder months, it migrates to the food-rich foothills to breed. Likewise, during the spring, just before it makes its journey up the mountain, it sprouts berries the texture of frozen treats all over its belly and chest. … The author highly suggests that you do not put too much thought into the second trait.

Abomasnow
The Frost Tree Pokémon
Type: Grass/Ice
Official Registration #: 460
Entry: The evolved form of snover, by battle experience. These giant snow monsters are known for their reclusiveness and protectiveness towards their own kind. To protect themselves and their newborn snover, they whip up giant blizzards to conceal their location. In that way, their snover may get up and migrate up their mountainous territory in peace. Travelers who wander through these abomasnow-induced blizzards may stumble across what appear to be moving parts of forests. On the negative side, this greatly increases those travelers’ chances of getting horribly lost within the dizzying, bitter-cold storm. On the positive side, such a sight is incredible to behold if the traveler is on the right combination of psychoactive substa

Actually, never mind.

Why are dragons weak to ice?

For the same reason why many of the dinosaurs were killed off in the last major Ice Age, anonymous. Although modern-day dragons have adapted to withstand colder climates, they are still not fully adapted to withstand abrupt drops in temperature. Many dragons do not possess an insulating layer of fat, fur, or armor the way many other species of pokémon do, so they’re far more susceptible to things like hypothermia. It doesn’t help that many of the more famous dragon-types are also partially flying-types, which itself has a weakness to ice due to the fragility of their wings. (Freeze a flying-type’s wings, and you effectively disable them.) Seeing as the wings are of an additional importance to dragons due to their integral role in thermal regulation, this makes dragon/flying-types such as dragonite even more susceptible to lower temperatures.

In other words, dragons are weak to ice because they’re not well-adapted to colder temperatures. They are, however, well-adapted to succumbing to hypothermia.

Seel and Dewgong

Seel
The Sea Lion Pokémon
Type: Water
Official Registration #: 86
Entry: A three-foot-tall seal-like pokémon native to colder waters. As with all adorable pokémon, seel is a dangerous predator, capable of hunting down prey in the arctic seas by ramming into them with its sturdy horn and then ripping into them with its fangs. This, of course, isn’t the part that shocks people the most about it. Rather, what shocks people the most is the fact that, contrary to its pokédex classification, it’s light blue, not white.

Dewgong
The Sea Lion Pokémon
Type: Water/Ice
Official Registration #: 87
Entry: The evolved form of seel, by battle experience. This pokémon has the tendency to find icebergs, drag its body onto it, and curl up for a nap. In ancient times, mariners would stumble across lounging dewgong and mistake them for mermaids. This either says a lot about dewgong’s beauty or a lot about the mariners’ understanding of what women look like—the author has never been quite sure which.

The Spheal Line

Spheal
The Clap Pokémon
Type: Ice/Water
Official Registration #: 363
Entry: Despite being a large, seal-like pokémon, spheal are not particularly good swimmers. Instead, they travel from place to place by either rolling their ball-like bodies or by using their rubbery flesh to bounce from spot to spot. Due to their adorable appearance and largely docile nature, tamed spheal can sometimes be mistaken for toys. It is possible to distinguish spheal from rubber balls by bouncing them and determining which one claps; spheal will clap in response to either pleasure or excitement, including excitement of the negative sort.

Edit: As a disclaimer, the author has been informed by his editor that he is required to say that the above is a terrible suggestion and that one must not attempt to bounce spheal, lest they wish to be “Ice Balled in the face” for their efforts.

Sealeo
The Ball Roll Pokémon
Type: Ice/Water
Official Registration #: 364
Entry: The evolved form of spheal, by battle experience. Contrary to popular belief, sealeo are large, seal-like pokémon famous for balancing objects—including spheal—on their highly sensitive noses in order to thoroughly investigate their properties. Celio, whose name is a homophone to the pokémon species, is the administrator of the Sevii Islands storage system and regrets to inform all readers that he cannot, in fact, balance anything on his nose at all, short of his glasses.

Walrein
The Ice Break Pokémon
Type: Ice/Water
Official Registration #: 365
Entry: The evolved form of sealeo, by battle experience. This large, walrus-like pokémon is rarely found on the beaches of colder regions. It is known for both its massive tusks, which are capable of shattering thick sheets of ice, and its blubber, which is capable of protecting itself from both subzero temperatures and physical blows … which is odd to say, as walrein’s primary weaknesses are actually fighting-types, rock-type techniques, beartic claws, and human-made harpoons, all of which the author is told are rather physical in nature.

Bergmite and Avalugg

Bergmite
The Ice Chunk Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 712
Entry: This three-foot-tall iceberg pokémon lives in the coldest, most mountainous reaches of Kalos. Humans should be warned when approaching this pokémon. It lives in vast herds, and when encountered, it will defend itself by collaborating with other bergmite to freeze opponents in solid blocks of ice. These blocks are then meticulously maintained by other members of the herd, who will repair cracks in the ice by freezing it solid again. While rescue missions for bergmite victims may consequently take up to a week, on the positive side, victims do make rather attractive decorations until rescued.

Since when are you the sort to look for the positive in a terrible situation? —LH

Since I lost a week to a bergmite colony but gained incredibly valuable insight into their tastes in interior design. —Bill

Avalugg
The Iceberg Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 713
Entry: The evolved form of bergmite, by battle experience. This giant pokémon is made of solid ice so compacted that it’s not only one of the heaviest pokémon in existence, but also, its body can crush anything that stands in its way. It is said that wandering avalugg are consequently responsible for a number of maritime disasters, including the one that eventually led to a mediocre romance film that received high praise upon its release for inexplicable reasons. It is said that watching this film is just as tedious and mind-numbing as being victimized by a herd of bergmite, which means, on an indirect level, avalugg are just as dangerous as its preevolved form.

Cubchoo and Beartic

Cubchoo
The Chill Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 613
Entry: The nose of this small, polar bear-like pokémon is constantly running. When in battle, it sniffs its giant drop of snot back into its nose because the mucus provides it with the raw material needed for its ice powers … and also because making an opponent feel immensely disgusted is a fantastically effective distraction.

Beartic
The Freezing Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 614
Entry: The evolved form of cubchoo, by battle experience. An apex predator of the frosty north, this polar bear pokémon is capable of exhaling freezing breaths. It uses this breath to form icy claws and fangs to fight and take down prey … because the six-inch claws and three-inch fangs it already has is certainly not enough.

The Vanillite Line

Vanillite
The Fresh Snow Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 582
Entry: Even at a young age, this sprite pokémon is gifted with extraordinary mastery over the ice element. It breathes gusts of wind that reach temperatures of up to -58 degrees Fahrenheit, and it can make snow fall in the areas around it, even in ordinarily hot and humid conditions. Additionally, this pokémon and its evolutions are noted for strongly resembling ice cream cones, but the reader should be aware that vanillite does not taste like vanilla.

Vanillish
The Icy Snow Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 583
Entry: The evolved form of vanillite, by battle experience. Its mastery over the ice element continues to grow after evolution, to the point where it gains the ability to not only create snowfall but sustain it in the air in order to generate a fog of ice and snow to conceal it from enemies. It also does not taste like vanilla.

Vanilluxe
The Snowstorm Pokémon
Type: Ice
Official Registration #: 584
Entry: The evolved form of vanillish, by battle experience. A highly dangerous ice-type, vanilluxe is capable of drawing in large amounts of water and moisture from the air and exhaling raging blizzards in an instant. These blizzards have the ability to freeze an opponent or induce frostbite in humans within seconds. On the other hand, this pokémon does taste like vanilla, so there’s at least some positive in attempting to approach one.

Hello Bill! I went through the entire database you have posted here (I love your work by the way!) and I have come across the realization that you do not have an entry for the fabled Pokemon Kyurem. I have heard it can easily generate freezing cold temperatures and is said to be vicious, so if you go to investigate, be careful! Be sure to post your findings as well.

Thank you!

It’s very true that I have yet to cover many of the Unovan legendaries, and I do agree that the legend of Kyurem is especially fascinating. However, I must say that it would hardly do the legend justice to cover only Kyurem and not the other two dragons associated with the story, so without further ado, the dragons of Unova:

Reshiram
The Vast White Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Fire
Official Registration #: 643
Entry: According to Unovan folklore, Reshiram flew across the region on feathery, white wings and wielded powerful flames to fight in the name of truth. According to Unovan memes, however, the most interesting aspects of Reshiram are its species name and the pointed organ between its hind legs, and because of this unfortunately placed interest, this blog’s staff finds it necessary to clarify that the name “Vast White” refers to Reshiram’s height, the organ between its hind legs is a set of feathers that assists in navigation, and the author is immensely disappointed in anyone who assumes otherwise for any of this.

Zekrom
The Deep Black Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Electric
Official Registration #: 644
Entry: According to Unovan folklore, Zekrom flew across the region on leathery, black wings and wielded powerful bolts of electricity to fight in the name of ideals. More specifically, Zekrom sided with anyone who sought an ideal world by hiding in anvil clouds and striking the earth or its trainer’s opponents with lightning. Because nothing says “Unovan” quite like establishing your concept of an ideal world via liberal application of excessive force, preferably from above.

Kyurem
The Boundary Pokémon
Type: Dragon/Ice
Official Registration #: 646
Entry: According to Unovan folklore, Kyurem fell to Earth thousands of years ago, and in the process, the energy contained within its body split in two and evacuated to form Reshiram and Zekrom. In the absence of both its thirst for truth and passion for ideals, Kyurem became an icy shell: empty within, save for the power to exude supercold air capable of freezing anything within a mile radius of itself. In other words, Kyurem is a hollow being, devoid of all its hopes and dreams but in possession of an icy heart—which, in other words, means that this pokémon is a rather accurate depiction of adulthood.
