Why are some eeveelutions more canine, some more feline, some more vulpine, etc.? It’s certainly more interesting than having them all be the same but recolored for type, but why did nature do that one?

In most cases, it’s a product of adaptive evolution. Each eeveelution possesses the traits it has because those better equip it for the specific niche it serves. For example, the more “feline” vaporeon looks the way it does because it’s meant to have a certain sense of agility as it glides through the water and chases after fish. By contrast, the more “canine” jolteon possesses dog-like traits because their hunting-style is more dog-like (and also because their thinner muzzle makes it easier for them to sniff out and dig out the eggs that form a staple of their diets). Additionally, the more “vulpine” flareon actually looks the way it does for a combination of both: as it hunts for small rodents on its own, it needs both agility and sharper senses. That and its puffier coat, which some say also make it look vulpine, is better at keeping its body from overheating, as strange as that is to say.

Alternatively, in certain cases, certain traits were simply bred into the species—meaning, breeders carefully controlled the parentage of eevee to ensure that they possess certain traits upon evolution, as in the case of the more cat-like espeon, the more dog-and-rabbit-like sylveon, and the more fox-like umbreon. (Of course, it’s worth it to note that fox-like adaptations have always benefited umbreon in the wild as well, so breeders didn’t exactly have to do much to get a more vulpine umbreon.)

As for leafeon and glaceon, they’re a bit of both too. They’re both vulpine, yes, but leafeon was bred to be that way, whereas glaceon essentially adapted to be that way on its own (as their fox-like characteristics make it easier for them to fish).

Hi Bill! Perhaps you can help me with something of a problem? Although, in regard to the Aspiring Dark Rookie Trainer’s father, maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. I run a ranch north of Tohjo Falls, and the Eevee family is kind of our signature. While my partners (a male Jolteon and female Umbreon) are only responsible for a handful of the Eevee produced, about 70% of the pups are evolving into Umbreon, even outside normal conditions. Some of my…less pleased clients are threatening to sue. Thoughts?

Hmm. It’s extremely rare, but there are cases in which eevee that are comfortable and raised in a fairly safe and consistent environment (meaning, there are no particular controllable factors that would affect their evolution present) will be “locked” genetically. That is to say, if one or both parents are eeveelutions, one parent will pass down genes that will essentially choose which evolution an eevee will undergo pre-birth.

There are ways to counter this, however. Usually, the introduction of another environmental factor will knock their pups’ genetics “off balance” so to speak, just enough to allow them to access all of their potential evolutions again. So for example, you could plant a thunder stone near the parents’ burrow, in a place the eevee themselves can’t access but just close enough to allow the stone’s radiation to seep into the nesting ground. Alternatively, samples of moss or ice rock or the other evolution stones will work.

Also, because you live in the mountains, you may wish to keep an eye out for clefairy. While eevee don’t evolve via moon stone, high exposure to fragments of moon stone (otherwise known as moon shards) can sometimes influence an eevee into evolving into an umbreon, regardless of the time of day, so long as its other requirement of closeness with a trainer is met. Clefairy often collect moon shards to build their own moon stones, so if you happen to see a clefairy nearby, there’s a good chance there’s a moon shard cache (along with a clefairy colony) nearby too. These are just as rare as the above possibility, especially if you live in an area that hasn’t seen a clefairy colony before, but given how capricious clefairy can be and given the possibility that the recent bizarre weather we’ve been having could very well have carried moon shards down the mountains, it’s still worth looking into. Should you have a clefairy invasion on your hands, calling in a trainer or few should help clear that up. As in, a sufficient number of humans heading directly towards a clefairy cache will often encourage the colony to pick up and leave on their own.

Best of luck!

Hello! I’d like some help with taking care of my Pokémon. Recently, my Eevee has evolved into a Jolteon, and sometimes when she encounters something new the first thing she does is try to shock it lightly, which has startled people and Pokémon that she comes across. Sometimes I can convince her not to do this but other times she gives in to her curiosity. How can I help her to stop doing that for the most part, or is it a friendly gesture of the Jolteon species that can’t be stopped? Thank you!

Unfortunately, anonymous, a lot of electric-types tend to use their electricity to explore their worlds in exactly the manner you’re describing.

Fortunately, it’s not entirely preventable, although it is difficult to curb. One of the things you can do is teach her to heel (see this ask: http://bills-pokedex.tumblr.com/post/163998759883/help-my-cubchoo-has-an-insatiable-appetite-for), then combine that with a bit of training to teach her not to shock. Alternatively, teach her to use her other senses, particularly smell, rather than her electrical reading.

I realize that sounds a bit vague, but it hinges a lot on the same principles as teaching her to heel. In other words, you need to use a lot of positive reinforcement. When she shocks, tell her no (or to heel), then follow up by instructing her in as clear and simple a manner how to properly interact with an object of her curiosity. When she interacts with that object in the correct manner, however, you should reward her until she begins to understand the difference between wanted and unwanted behavior. Once that difference is ingrained in her mind, she’ll begin to follow wanted behavioral patterns, at first consciously and then habitually as time goes on.

Of course, because you’re working against instinct, it will take a bit more patience and persistence than usual to get what you want her to do to stick. She will, at first, be more inclined to follow instinct, especially because electrical sensing tends to be more comfortable for electric-types. However, be as consistent as possible, and slowly but surely, you’ll be able to teach her to use her nose instead.

Best of luck, anonymous!

Hello! My service Pokémon, an Eevee, recently went in for a check up.. and came out a Jolteon! I’m not sure what happened, but do you have any advice? I was planning to evolve him into a Vaporeon later in life, so this turn of events is rather jarring. I was never told that the nurse would evolve him, either.

I would first query the center, if I’m to be perfectly blunt, anonymous. It’s strictly against protocol to allow a service pokémon to evolve without an owner’s consent, as doing so risks rendering the pokémon unable to work. You may even be eligible for compensation, although I admit I’m less familiar with the laws about that.

Other than that, determine if your jolteon: A) can still perform the tasks he was meant to do for you, and B) is happy as a jolteon. If the answer to both is yes, then hopefully, things will be all right with some minor adjustments. Simply care for him the same way you would have if he were still an eevee, only increase his food and water, and keep him away from sensitive electronics until he can better control his abilities, as well as windows during thunderstorms from now onwards. If the answer to either question is no—especially the first question—then you should contact your local disability services organization immediately for a new service pokémon and support for your case.

Best of luck, anonymous, and I’m so sorry for what you’re going through.

hey bill! recently I got an eevee that I plan on evolving into jolteon. however when I try to introduce him to thunderstone I have for him, mai, my alolan raichu, snatches the stone and hides it. it takes me hours to find it each time >:( I don’t know why shes doing this can u help

Pay close attention to the body language of your eevee, anonymous. Mai, as an Alolan raichu, is half-psychic and highly empathic as a result. Thus, it’s likely she’s picking up on your eevee’s anxiety about evolving (at all or into jolteon specifically) and trying to stop you from forcing your eevee to evolve against his will. Communicate with your eevee and make it absolutely clear to him that evolution is his choice, including and especially when it comes to the topic of what he wishes to evolve into. If he seems hesitant at the idea of becoming a jolteon, ask him if he would prefer a different form or if he would wish to stay an eevee. Be sure to go over all of his options carefully so he can make the decision on his own. If you absolutely must have a jolteon, you can try convincing him, but do so in a way that makes it clear you have his interests at heart.

If he actually does want to evolve into a jolteon, then the other possible issue at play here is Mai’s worry that you’re getting another electric-type to replace her on the field. If this is the case, then be sure to reassure her that she will always be valuable to your team and that you by no means intend on retiring her.

Of course, there is also the possibility that neither of these are Mai’s concerns, at which point you’ll need to communicate with Mai as much as possible to figure out what it is that’s troubling her. Take her aside, sit her down, and ask her about her concerns. Keep reassuring her that you only want what’s best for your entire team, but you’re willing to be perfectly flexible to meet their needs.

Best of luck, anonymous!

I always wondered if the eeveelutions are considered omnivores what specifically do their diets consist of? And does it differ on the specific eeveelution?

Eevee and its evolutions lean more toward (for the most part) carnivorous lifestyles, actually. While, like most pokémon, they can eat nuts, berries, grains, root vegetables, and so forth, much of their diet should be meat and protein of some kind.

That having been said, the answer to your second question depends. In captivity, the eevee family can actually be fed the exact same diet, regardless of what evolution each individual takes, with no real consequences so long as their trainer keeps in mind that they should be fed a balance of foods.

In the wild however, absolutely, it depends on the evolution.

Eevee tend to have the most balanced diet (as one would expect) and will eat whatever it can find in its immediate environment.

Flareon often stick to slower animals and pokémon, and its favored food sources tend to be small mammals. It will also display the unusual behavior of roasting their food with the intention of cooking it before eating. (Trainers should be aware that tamed flareon also display this behavior and should only be fed in fireproof environments.)

Vaporeon, being aquatic pokémon, will eat mostly seafood, including fish, amphibians, turtles, jellyfish, and aquatic mammals (such as seals). It tends to avoid shellfish, likely due to the difficulty in getting them open, but it will also hunt for larger meat sources (such as walruses, dolphins, and even sharks) in packs.

Jolteon, being faster and gifted with electrical attacks, often hunt for birds and forage for eggs. It’s also the one eeveelution that prefers pokémon meat over animal meat, as bird pokémon tend to be larger targets than their animal “counterparts.”

Espeon and Leafeon both tend to eat more of a herbivorous diet than their cousins. This does not mean that they are strictly herbivorous; simply that they forage more often than the others. Espeon tends to hunt for insects and other animals with lesser cognitive functions thanks to its psychic abilities. Leafeon, meanwhile, avoids insects (due to its plant biology) and consumes largely rodents, rabbits, frogs, and anything else it can find in its forest habitat. (Leafeon also photosynthesizes whenever a food source isn’t readily available.)

Umbreon, meanwhile, is much more of a carnivore than its cousins in that its diet consists almost entirely of meat. As a nocturnal, forest-dwelling pokémon in nature, it will often hunt for small, ground-dwelling pokémon and animals, particularly diurnal ones. It has no qualms raiding the nests of sleeping prey, in other words.

Glaceon will often consume whatever it can find in its colder, more arctic environment—usually seafood (for polar glaceon) or rabbits (for mountainous). Glaceon may also share territory with vaporeon, sometimes even hunting alongside them to take down larger prey (such as seals and even walruses).

Finally, Sylveon, like eevee, will eat whatever it can find in its environment but typically chooses prey it can lure into dark corners of its habitat and then devour.

My Eevee originally wanted to become a Sylveon, but recently he resisted evolution so I let my Espeon talk to him to ask why and he now wants to become a Jolteon to impress another trainer’s Flaaffy he just met (literally, just met her yesterday). Can I discourage him from making such a hasty decision? She has shown no interest in him and I doubt the trainer is going to stay in town for much longer. He seems to just be blinded by “love”

Oh dear.

First and foremost, yes, you can discourage him from going through with this decision. But first, ensure that he has absolutely no way of coming in contact with thunderstone. Remove any source of it from your possession to ensure that your eevee doesn’t get impatient and sneak off with it himself.

Once you succeed in doing that, your best chance is to wait until the flaaffy and her trainer leave. Eevee can be stubborn when it comes to mating partners, so you’ll need to be patient. If it looks like they won’t leave for quite some time, however, work with the flaaffy’s trainer if you can to let your eevee continue with his attempts to woo her. Sometimes, getting rejected repeatedly with increasing fervor on the flaaffy’s part will trigger a decrease of interest in your eevee. Of course, do keep an eye on both pokémon to ensure that the flaaffy doesn’t do too much damage to your eevee.

Also, use the fact that you have an espeon to your advantage. As a fellow member of the eevee family, your espeon is in the best position to explain evolution to your eevee, as they will know how grave the decision is for their kind. If it looks like your eevee is growing restless to evolve, if he’s being particularly ornery over the denial of a thunderstone, or if his interest in flaaffy refuses to wane after a few days, have your espeon sit down and communicate with your eevee on what it means to evolve. If you have any other evolved pokémon, allow them to join in on the discussion.

If your espeon can’t convince him, however, try sitting down with him and explaining to him yourself that evolution is a process that should only be undertaken for oneself, if one is absolutely certain that the form they’ve chosen is right (as it’s irreversible and all). I would only try this as an absolute last resort to reason with him, as it sounds as if your eevee is set in his decision. Allow for time to whittle away at his interest first and then try to speak with him about it.

If, even after going through all of these options, your eevee still wishes to evolve into a jolteon for the sake of love, consider finding him a potential mating partner of a type that he can’t possibly evolve into (as far as we know at the moment). Glameow, for example. In the best case scenario with this option, your eevee will become too distracted by his new partner to care about the flaaffy. In the worst case scenario, you’ll be the discoverer of a new eeveelution.

Good luck, anonymous!
