rewriting my ask. a friend of mine izzz thinking about getting a murkrow, but i know that they collect shiny thingzzz. i juzzzt want to know if it would try and steal something like, say, a shiny red plazzztic device or something along thozzze lines. juzzzt asking for a friend though. yeah.

It’s possible that it would, but the thing about murkrow is that they’re also highly intelligent and easy to train. If that shiny, red plastic thing was sentient and if its owner trained their murkrow to leave that shiny, red plastic thing alone, then the shiny, red plastic thing and the pokémon living inside it won’t have much to worry about.

Best of luck, friend!

Hey bill, I was in alola recently and someone made a passing remark along the lines of “wow, rotom dex is amazing, what’s next, a rotom in the PC?” And it got me wondering, could a rotom possess your storage system creating a new form? I think you should try it out zzt

…I’m actually torn between saying absolutely not and being curious enough to do it.

I’m not. You’re not doing that. —LH

You’re right. Something that complicated would probably send a rotom’s mind reeling. —Bill

Yes. Yes, that is exactly why you shouldn’t do that. Not the end user or how many people in the Association would murder you —LH

Hello! I’m one of the handful of alolan trainers lucky enough to have recieve a rotomdex. The little guy’s a sweetheart, and super helpful too. Recently though, he ended up getting sick. I took him to the pokemon center near my house already, and they looked at him and gave me some medicine to relieve the symptoms. Thing is, he wants to stay in the ‘dex while he’s resting. He says he’d prefer being able to talk to me normally, and he feels more comfortable that way. (1/2)

To him, no, as your rotom itself is technically in an incorporeal, electric state. If anything, this may be worrisome because the medication is only effective when rotom has a body—that is, when it’s not possessing something else. For this reason, his recovery may be slow going, although if you regularly coax him out to take his medicine and rest for a few moments, he should eventually recover.

To his chassis, possibly. When a rotom overheats while possessing an appliance, what’s actually happening (other than literal overheating) is that rotom is generating excess electricity. This risks overloading its borrowed body, if the heat doesn’t simply melt the wiring.

In short, as comfortable as he may be, he really should spend time outside of the pokédex until he’s feeling better.

As for your second set of questions, from what I understand, it’s more that Kukui selects rotom he’s befriended and deemed responsible enough to take care of his proteges. This may sound a little odd, but from what I also understand, this is completely typical for Professor Kukui…

Hi Bill, it’s that photo-happy Rotom again, bzzrt! Your advice really helped, and I’m no longer a photophile! Though… I have a new problem. My Trainer’s girlfriend keeps taking selfies using my favorite camera, bzzrt, and will burn up all the memory before I can sneak a couple of shots. Any idea how I can stop her, short of a Thunder Wave?

Hello again! Glad to hear that my advice helped!

As for your current conundrum, might I suggest communicating with your trainer? Your trainer is perhaps your best liaison between his girlfriend and you, so if anyone can convey just how special that camera is to you, it would be him. The worst case scenario is, of course, that he ends up having to buy her a camera as well, but luckily, I’ve been told that mini cameras are still rather cheap on PokéBay.

Best of luck, little rotom!

I recently befriended a Beheeyem. While it’s a wonderful Pokemon and has been getting along fine with the rest of my team, I’ve noticed that my Rotom seems to be acting as a rather poor influence. At first the two were just pulling harmless pranks, but now they’ve got an obsession with purposfully erasing certain memories, watching me in my sleep, and inflicting inconvenient bouts of hypnosis. Is there any way I could encourage the two to cease this behavior without separating them? Thank you!

Believe it or not, it might be most effective to treat them like human children. Ghost-types and psychic-types tend to be highly intelligent, so they can sometimes comprehend discipline the way a younger human would.

That having been said, start off by explaining to them in a simple but calm and firm manner why their behavior is harmful. Perhaps explain to them that using hypnosis on you could actually hurt you, or ask them why they do it (other than because they think it’s funny). At this point, also try to determine why, specifically, this behavior is happening—whether it’s because they want your attention or because they’re bored or so forth. Once you determine the specific source, try to remedy that as well.

Rather than a permanent separation, consider a temporary time-out. Separate them for a short amount of time into two safe but relatively uninteresting parts of your home until they calm down. Once they do, explain to them again what specific parts of their behavior is unacceptable.

Implement “fun” activities into your routine, or make certain parts of it more exciting. The more fun your pokémon have (in ways you believe are acceptable), the less likely they’ll resort to pranks.

Finally, consider rewards. For every day they go without pulling a prank or engaging in negative behavior, give them a treat. This will also allow them to enjoy their day without engaging in bad behavior.

Ultimately, remember to be firm and calm. You’re correcting behavior, not punishing them, and there is very likely a reason why they’re engaging in this kind of behavior. If you assert yourself but show you’re willing to negotiate, it’ll be easier to control and unlearn bad habits such as these.

Best of luck, anonymous!

Bill why is it that pokémon such as Rotom and Spiritomb are not considered legendary pokémon but the Cosmog line are? I used to think that a pre-requisite for legendary pokémon was not evolving, but you can’t say that there can be only one because two different Cosmogs have been identified. Is there even an official way of figuring it out?

Actual rarity and power levels, anonymous. While it’s true that it’s incredibly difficult to find spiritomb and rotom in the wild, neither are so rare that they’re considered mythical or actual cryptids. In fact, spiritomb alone is actually quite common, assuming you can find a an odd keystone (which is uncomfortably common in the highly spiritual Sinnoh).

Likewise, neither pokémon possess abilities on the same level as true legends or even mythical pokémon. While, yes, cosmog and cosmoem technically possess power levels much less potent than rotom or spiritomb on the battlefield, both members of that line possess unique, reality-warping abilities off the battlefield—abilities that rotom and spiritomb and other particularly rare species can only dream of possessing. And then, of course, there’s the fact that cosmog’s final evolutions possess power levels that are far more potent than that of most other pokémon species, so that, in combination with cosmog’s natural abilities, simply sets it apart from other pokémon.

In short, it’s not so much rarity alone, anonymous, but rather rarity and what a pokémon can do that form the litmus test of what is and isn’t a legendary.
