Mawile

Mawile
The Deceiver Pokémon
Type: Steel/Fairy
Official Registration #: 303
Entry: A small, childlike pokémon first discovered in the cave systems of Hoenn. This pokémon is famous for its giant and fantastically strong set of false jaws growing from its head. Trainers should take caution: the front of this pokémon looks adorable, a fact that this pokémon uses to its advantage in order to lure in prey. When prey is close enough, it turns abruptly and chomps down on the unsuspecting victim with its false jaws. As for its strength, mawile is capable of biting through steel beams. Its false jaws, meanwhile, can do much worse.

The Aron Line

Aron
The Iron Armor Pokémon
Type: Steel/Rock
Official Registration #: 304
Entry: A small but hefty tank-like pokémon originally discovered in the cave systems of Hoenn. Although these small but docile pokémon typically live deep underground, they thrive on iron and will thus rise to the surface in search of it if underground deposits run dry. In the process, they quickly become destructive forces of nature, capable of destroying anything within their paths easily until they consume the iron they need. They have been known to devour anything containing iron, including railroad tracks, cars, heavy equipment, sensitive research equipment, and more … yet the editor of this blog still considers them to be “cute” and “not at all dangerous” for some reason.

Lairon
The Iron Armor Pokémon
Type: Steel/Rock
Official Registration #: 305
Entry: The evolved form of aron, by battle experience. Aron, a pokémon that typically lives in herds, will congregate into similar herd structures after evolution. These herds typically congregate near mineral-rich underground springs, where they often engage in vicious battles with one another by slamming into each other’s armor, all in preparation for fights against invading pokémon or humans. Unfortunately, because their spring-side habitats tend to be closer to the surface than their nests as aron, they are known to lay waste to even more human-built structures, including mines, tunnels, or mountainside villages. For whatever reason, the editor of this blog thinks lairon is cute too.

Aggron
The Iron Armor Pokémon
Type: Steel/Rock
Official Registration #: 306
Entry: The evolved form of lairon, by battle experience. Upon evolution, aggron will break away from its former herd and roam vast, mountainous territory by itself. A single aggron will claim an entire mountain as its personal territory, and as such, aggron are known to aggressively repel other aggron—even those from its former herd—with incredible feats of violence. Lone aggron are therefore much easier to capture and train, and in fact, aggron are among the strongest pokémon available in the Hoenn region. Their popularity is only helped by the fact that the Hoennian champion, Steven Stone, includes one among his signature team … which, actually, might explain the editor’s predilection towards them.

What are you implying?! —LH

Drilbur and Excadrill

Drilbur
The Mole Pokémon
Type: Ground
Official Registration #: 529
Entry: A foot-tall mole-like pokémon native to the cave systems of Unova. An extremely skilled digger, drilbur can dig through even solid rock at speeds of up to thirty miles an hour. It can therefore give cars running aboveground a good race. This is a fact that has actually been published in the Unovan pokédex, which honestly says more about either Unovan cars or past-times than it does about drilbur.

Excadrill
The Subterrene Pokémon
Type: Ground/Steel
Official Registration #: 530
Entry: The evolved form of drilbur, by battle experience. Upon evolution, excadrill gains steel-tipped claws and a drill-tipped helmet, both of which enable it to burrow up to 300 feet into the ground and/or straight through iron plates. It creates elaborate tunnel systems for labours consisting of scores of drilbur and excadrill, but such systems have been known to inflict damage on human structures, specifically subway systems. Luckily—considering the fact that excadrill’s native Unova has only one tunnel system that loops beneath Nimbasa and Anville, neither of which are places where excadrill are known to live—the actual damage to human construction the average excadrill causes tends to be minimal at best.

Pineco and Forretress

Pineco
The Bagworm Pokémon
Type: Bug
Official Registration #: 204
Entry: This pokémon is famous for its strong resemblance to pine cones, which is not entirely helped by the fact that it dwells primarily in the coniferous forests of Johto. It remains largely motionless as it hangs from trees, moving only to gather bark for its protective coat. Once complete, this coat is sturdy and more than capable of defending its pineco from attacks, but it also weighs more, which tends to result in exhausted pineco falling from their trees. There, pineco can easily be mistaken for fallen pinecones, which causes them to be picked up by humans and used for a variety of purposes, including—unfortunately speaking—fuel for fire. On the other hand, being used for fuel may be a slightly more dignified fate than being coated with glue and glitter and hung from elementary school windows and holiday trees, which happens quite frequently in this pokémon’s native Johto.

Forretress
The Bagworm Pokémon
Type: Bug/Steel
Official Registration #: 205
Entry: The evolved form of pineco, by battle experience. Famed for its hard armor and ability to use the technique Spikes, this nut-like pokémon attaches itself to a tree, where it only emerges in second-long bursts to catch prey. Otherwise, it spends the majority of its time within its impenetrable shell, shooting shell fragments from its outer coat whenever anyone draws near. It is thus valued not only by trainers as a formidable defense but also by recluses—such as this author—as the symbol of ideal living.

Skarmory

Skarmory
The Armor Bird Pokémon
Type: Steel/Flying
Official Registration #: 227
Entry: A predatory bird pokémon native to mountainous regions. This fierce raptor nests primarily in brambles, using the thorns to protect its chicks. As the hatchlings grow, the thorns scratch their wings, and the resulting scar tissue eventually hardens into a full set of metal armor that make skarmory difficult to take down. Adding to this defensive advantage, despite the weight of its own skin, skarmory is still one of the fastest bird-like pokémon in existence, clocking in at a top speed of over 180 miles per hour as it swoops in to snatch prey from crags. In short, it is, in every way, designed to be the perfect predator, which is why the mountainous areas of Johto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, and Kalos are dangerous to traverse and ill-advised for the unprepared trainer. However, despite the dangers skarmory pose towards unwary travelers, the skarmory that nest just outside of Fallarbor Town, Hoenn, live in fear of the one creature far fiercer and more terrifying than even the toughest, most battle-hardened skarmory alive: the editor of this blog.

I maintain a perfect battle record against skarmory. 🙂 —LH

It’s the smiley that terrifies me the most. —Bill

Pawniard and Bisharp

Pawniard
The Sharp Blade Pokémon
Type: Dark/Steel
Official Registration #: 624
Entry: This small, soldier-like pokémon is covered with knives. This means that pawniard’s body must be meticulously maintained via sharpening after every battle, which in turn means that pawniard attack most effectively in a group—so that no one pawniard’s blades will be worn down completely by the end of the match. Of course, this also means that hugging a pawniard is a terribly ill-advised idea, which the author had expected would be something that should go without saying until he actually looked up how many pawniard-related injuries were reported last year alone.

Bisharp
The Sword Blade Pokémon
Type: Dark/Steel
Official Registration #: 625
Entry: The evolved form of pawniard, by battle experience. This soldier-like pokémon is always seen in the company of a large number of pawniard. Bisharp apparently commands these pawniard, guiding them into attacking prey in one massive group until it can finish its opponents off with one final blow. Thanks to this behavior of using underlings to weaken an opponent enough for a final attack, bisharp may be comparable to certain types of humans, such as yakuza bosses, military generals, and any titular character in the magical girl genre.

Karrablast and Escavalier

Karrablast
The Clamping Pokémon
Type: Bug
Official Registration #: 588
Entry: Since the dawn of Western pokémonology, researchers have been baffled by this beetle-like pokémon’s ability to evolve when in proximity with shelmet. It certainly is a baffling mystery, considering the facts that karrablast eat snails, the species gains a shell that resembles its evolutionary partner’s upon evolution, and the act of evolving by using other pokémon or their body parts as a medium has been well recorded since the discovery of the mantyke and slowpoke lines. Yes, this is indeed a mystery that no one will ever solve.

Escavalier
The Cavalry Pokémon
Type: Bug/Steel
Official Registration #: 589
Entry: The evolved form of karrablast, if the subject is traded with or hit with a sufficient amount of energy from a shelmet. Upon evolution, it steals shelmet’s shell and uses it as armor. This new armor allows it to defend itself, which is a grave necessity due to this beetle-like pokémon’s tendency to fly around at high speeds and face opponents stronger than itself with an impulsive brand of bravery. Should all of this seem odd considering the fact that it strongly resembles a knight, one should only look towards historical records to know that knights were not as noble as fantasy depicts them as. In truth, there is only one confusing point to escavalier’s existence, and that is the fact that researchers acknowledge that its theft of shelmet’s extremely sturdy shell is a key part of its evolution, yet they are still baffled by how karrablast evolves.

Are certain pokemon, for example rock and steel types like Geodude, Metang, Roggenrolla and Magneton silicon based life forms? Or are all pokemon carbon based?

Yes, it’s true that some pokémon actually differ in composition from the more traditional carbon-based class. However, it’s a bit more complicated than one might think.

To be a bit more specific, only very certain pokémon under very particular conditions are silicon-based. It’s true that many of these are rock- or ground-types, but in addition, they’re not the ones that have even trace amounts of tissue. Putting it another way, if a pokémon possesses flesh-based organs, then it’s actually a mostly carbon-based life form. This includes pokémon such as geodude and onix. Likewise, steel-types such as probopass or the beldum line are actually quite literally steel and are thus also both iron- and carbon-based.

When you get into species that have either extraterrestrial or manmade origins or that are solid rock—such as solrock, lunatone, the baltoy line, and the roggenrola line—then you begin to encounter silicon-based life. It is also said that, being literal embodiments of their respective elements, legendaries such as Zygarde, Regirock, and Landorus are all silicon-based as well, even though one of them, Landorus, is apparently made of flesh. The exception to this rule is Diancie, as it is a living diamond and is thus carbon-based.

Then you have sableye, which eats rocks to the point where much of its body is pure precious stone, despite it not possessing the elemental affinity for the rock-type. (Although to be fair, whether or not it’s considered a silicon-based life form depends entirely on what gems comprise its diet, so whether or not it counts is up for debate.)

Unova Legendaries, Part V

Genesect
The Paleozoic Pokémon
Type: Bug/Steel
Official Registration #: 649
Entry: This insectoid pokémon had once been an apex predator in the dense forests of Unova during the, appropriately enough, Paleozoic era. Eons later, however, reports have surfaced that it had been resurrected from a fossil and modified to possess both steel armor and modern weaponry by Team Plasma … because nothing says “I care about pokémon freedom and welfare” like forcibly resurrecting one and welding a cannon to its back.

Unova Legendaries, Part II

Cobalion
The Iron Will Pokémon
Type: Steel/Fighting
Official Registration #: 638
Entry: Said to be the most charismatic member of the legendary group known as the Swords of Justice. Long ago, when Unova was engulfed in war, this goat-like legendary appeared to do battle against mankind and protect pokémon from human violence. Some say Cobalion had the right idea, and there are times when, quite frankly, this author can’t argue with that.

Terrakion
The Cavern Pokémon
Type: Rock/Fighting
Official Registration #: 639
Entry: Said to be the brawniest member of the Swords of Justice, capable of toppling castle walls with a single blow. Long ago, when Unova was engulfed in war, this legendary is said to have protected pokémon that had lost their homes to human violence … by destroying entire settlements, villages, fortresses, and other establishments of human civilization. Terrakion then went on to become a symbol of the Unovan military philosophy, because if there are two things no other institution can do better than the Unovan military, it’s seeking out the least productive methods of solving problems and missing the point entirely. (On that note, the author would like to announce his acquisition of several ground-types to Lt. Surge, former officer of the Unovan Army.)

Virizion
The Grassland Pokémon
Type: Grass/Fighting
Official Registration #: 640
Entry: Said to be the swiftest member of the Swords of Justice, whose battle style consists of confounding opponents with ultra-swift moves. Long ago, when Unova was engulfed in war, this legendary is said to have focused completely on protecting its pokémon friends, rather than going after humans or human settlements directly. Because of this interest in the well-being of its own kind and its focus on actual strategy, certain pokémon experts wonder if it is a native to Unova at all.
